Google Wave

Google is building a new, experimental idea aiming to reshape the future of communication on the web. It’s called Wave, and if you believe its developer, it’s “what email would look like if it were invented today.”

What’s new in Wave?

Email has been the standard in online communications for the past 40 years. You send a message to your brother about the family reunion and he responds with the date he thinks is best. It’s totally convenient, right up until the point that you decide Aunt Martha would be better able to talk to your Arizona relatives. Aunt Martha unfortunately doesn’t know that she can send the email to everybody at once and then everybody replies to you to tell you that they think there should be a game of pin the tail on the donkey and then since you CC’d Aunt Martha you get these responses like 4 times and suddenly your inbox is filled with 100 responses to your original email and you have no idea where to start…

This video shows how Google Wave solves this problem:

If you use Google Wave, you can bring all of your relatives into the same conversation and see everyone’s responses in one place. You can see your relatives typing in real-time and contribute to the conversation or you can respond to each person individually.

Cool… Why do I care?

Google Wave is opening a new door to people of all sorts to collaborate with their clients, colleagues and friends on projects in a much easier and more structured way. New gadgets and updates are coming out for Wave daily to make it better and allow newer functions, but it will only be a matter of time before Google sees fit to allow anybody that wants in to join their new service and the evolution of email is brought to fruition.

As stated by the video that’s maybe 3.5% of what is possible in Google Wave… I also update my Twitter, chat with my homies, transfer files, collaborate on graphic design projects, and talk to Aunt Martha using Google Wave. It’s still in beta, so you’ll have to sign up and wait for your invite or find a friend who has a few invitations left, but until then you can read my blog and drool over all of the awesome features that I uncover.

Here’s one more video from the creators of Google Wave that explains a little more than the first one:
